Paternal effects on fatty acid composition of tree peony seed oil

摘要Tree peony seed is a novel resource of edible oil with high -linolenic acid (ALA) content (>40%). To assess whether pollen sources influence the seed oil quality, fatty acids of hybrids from the combination of Paeonia ostii Feng Dan' and 30 cultivars were monitored and evaluated in this study. The results indicated that the content of total fatty acid and ALA ranged from 21.23 to 29.68% and from 46.75 to 64.71%, respectively. Thirty combinations were classified into four clusters. Cluster IV including Tian Xiang Jin', Zhou Ban Hong', Xiang Yang Hong' and Yu Jie' were good pollen donors because their hybrid seeds possessed the highest contents of ALA and unsaturated fatty acids, with an average of 159.39mgg(-1) and 263.76mgg(-1), respectively. This study provides a good base for breeding new cultivars with excellent edible oil and essential fatty acid contents for food.
