Reconsidering the phyllotaxy significance of seedlings in Clematis

摘要The taxonomic significance of Clematis seedling morphology has been emphasized and used for sub-generic and sectional classification of the genus for decades. However, seedlings of only 25 % Clematis spp. have been observed directly. Fourteen Clematis achenes, of which ten were reported for the first time, were germinated and their seedlings were described in this study. The results show that the seedlings of C. acerifolia, C. acerifolia var. elobata, C. urophylla, C. repens, C. brevicaudata, and C. peterae, had typical type I seedlings, and those of C. integrifolia and C. hexapetala had type II. Six species showed atypical seedling morphology as defined in the previous studies. It is also the first time to describe that the seedlings of the species of sect. Naravelia and sect. Fruticella have opposite leaves, but are different from the type II. Suppressed or elongated hypocotyls are most likely determined by the temperature. Our results suggest that it may be inappropriate to classify Clematis seedlings into two types, and the use of seedlings characters for taxonomic classification should be evaluated carefully.
